What ID do you need for a notary in New Jersey?
A quick checklist so your appointment goes smoothly.
The most common reason a notarization can't go ahead is a problem with ID. Here's what to have ready before your appointment in New Jersey.
What counts as acceptable ID
A New Jersey notary must be satisfied that you are who you say you are. In practice, that means a current government-issued photo ID with your signature, such as:
- State driver's license or non-driver ID card (any U.S. state)
- U.S. passport or passport card
- Foreign passport
- U.S. military ID
- Permanent resident card (green card)
Bring the original — photos or photocopies of an ID aren't accepted.
Does the name have to match?
The name on your ID should match the name you're signing on the document. Small differences (a middle initial, for example) are usually fine. If your name changed through marriage or divorce and your ID hasn't caught up, tell us before the appointment so we can talk through your options.
What if my ID is expired?
Plan on bringing an unexpired ID. If yours is expired or was lost, let us know when you book — don't wait until we arrive.
What if I don't have ID at all?
A notary may be able to identify you through a credible witness: someone who personally knows you, has acceptable ID and appears in person with you. Not every situation allows this, so please ask when booking.
Hospital and care-home signings
Patients often don't have their wallet at the bedside. Ask a family member to bring the signer's ID before the appointment — and make sure the signer is alert and able to communicate.
Every signer needs ID
If two spouses are signing a deed, both need their own ID. Witnesses may also need ID, depending on the document.
